Corn was the top crop in South Dakota in 2016 in terms of the value of production, according to the South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. There were 5.13 million acres of corn harvested in 2016, and the crop was valued at $2.6 billion.

There were more acres of soybeans harvested in South Dakota in 2016 than corn. NASS pegged soybean harvested acres at 5.17 million and the value of production at $2.3 billion.

Hay and haylage ranked third in acres and value. There were 3.1 million acres harvested in 2016 with a value of $490 million.

Wheat was fourth with 2.157 million acres harvested and a value of production of $439 million.

Sunflower was fifth with 540,000 harvested acres and a value of $178 million.
