DEALING WITH AFTERMATH: After last year’s derecho, many fields in central Iowa were left with downed corn, and some fields were completely flattened. While most growers have dealt with volunteer corn before, many growers in the region are expecting a larger-than-normal volume of volunteer corn in these fields in 2021. This photo of a field in Dallas County taken in October is a prime example. While 5,000 to 10,000 plants per acre can cause up to 54% yield loss in soybeans and 13% yield loss in corn, some growers will be dealing with fields full of volunteer corn.
