YOUR INPUT COUNTS: Each year ICGA develops a list of legislative priorities for state and federal levels.

The Iowa Corn Growers Association released its final list of state and federal policy priorities for 2019.

Each year the organization develops a list of legislative priorities on both the state and federal levels. “ICGA members do this by completing a policy survey, by gathering for discussion at ICGA roundtables held in their areas of the state during the summer, and then adopting policy at the annual Grassroots Summit, which is held in late August,” says ICGA President Curt Mether, a farmer from Logan in western Iowa. “ICGA provides several opportunities throughout the year for members to get engaged and voice their opinion on different issues.”

State priorities
The 2019 ICGA state priorities, listed in alphabetical order, are:

  • Conservation, water quality. Maintain legislative funding stream for Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy.

  • Ethanol. Obtain funding for renewable infrastructure cost-share program (RFIP).

  • Livestock. Support existing regulatory framework for the livestock industry.

  • Research. Fund Ag Extension and Diagnostic Lab.

  • Taxes. Protect critical tax credits (Section 179 and biofuels).

Federal priorities
The 2019 ICGA federal priorities, listed in alphabetical order, are:

  • Ethanol. Retain the Renewable Fuel Standard and reduce regulatory barriers for higher blends.

  • Risk management. Protect crop insurance funding during the implementation and duration of the farm bill.

  • Trade. Expand new and protect existing bilateral and multilateral trade agreements; protect and expand funding for Market Access Program and Foreign Market Development during farm bill implementation.

  • Transportation infrastructure. Maintain and upgrade inland waterways system.

“I urge all ICGA members to attend our Day on the Hill at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines on Jan. 22 and March 27. Visit with legislators to have your voice heard and share your priorities with the state policy makers,” Mether says. “If you can’t attend one of the Day on the Hill events, visit with your local legislator, whenever you can, to let them know about the importance of these issues and how you feel regarding any pending or possible legislation.”

Mether encourages all Iowa farmers who grow corn, and anyone interested in corn production, to join ICGA. “By increasing our membership, we can continue to work together to advocate for agriculture and reach our goal of 10,000 members,” he says. “Your engagement and voice matter, as that determines all of our success.”
