Roundup Ready soybeans coming in 1996
In this early Roundup Ready soybean story, soybean breeders were predicting huge acres beyond 1996. But this initial year there would be 10 varieties in total from three companies -- Delta and Pine Land, Asgrow and Hartz Seed. The company touted good crop tolerance and similar yields. Price mentioned was $5 more for 50 pounds of RR beans over the conventional variety. And nobody thought there were dangers in overusing Roundup. “Monsanto’s Karen Marshall said that Roundup had been used all over the world for 20 years, and no resistant weeds have appeared. University weed specialists agree.”
My how biology taught us a huge lesson here.
