Corn planting is nearing completion in many states, and emergence rates made big jumps over the past week. Farmers planting soybeans made a lot of progress out in the field, too. Soybean emergence rates are still just slightly ahead of average.

Farmers in many states are nearly done planting corn, with 10 of the major corn-producing states at more than 85% planted. Overall planting progress is at 86% as of May 22, right on par with the 85% five-year average. Lots of progress was made in Michigan, where corn farmers went from 34% planted to 65% in the span of a week.

Corn emergence is slightly ahead of the five-year overall pace of 55% at 60% as of May 22. While this is 9 points behind 2015 pace, it's well ahead of the 43% emergence rate of a week ago.

Farmers planting soybeans made a lot of overall progress last week, going from 36% to 56% planted. Big progress was made in Wisconsin, where farmers now have 66% of the soybean crop planted, compared to 33% a week ago. Farmers in Iowa also made a lot of progress and now have 74% of their soybeans planted, compared to 43% last week.

Soybeans are now emerging in all of the major-producing states, and the emergence rate is 22%, which is right on par with the five-year average. States ahead of average soybean emergence rates include Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
