Channel’s Protexus corn tolerant against five diseases

Northern Seed Extra: The new corn variety offers tolerance against anthracnose stalk rot and other corn diseases.

Channel has a new seed product lineup that provides enhanced disease tolerance.

Company representatives introduced its Protexus corn products during the 2018 Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa, in August.

Protexus provides tolerance against five yield-robbing diseases: anthracnose stalk rot, Goss’s wilt and leaf blight, northern corn leaf blight, gray leaf spot and southern rust of corn, according to Brett Ochs, Channel brand corn product manager.

“The new Channel Protexus products provide protection against some of the most financially devastating corn diseases,” he says.

Relative maturity of the new corn products ranges from 97-115 RM.

The portfolio will be offered in select geographies and treated with Acceleron Seed Applied Solutions Elite with Enhanced Disease Control, which reduces infections caused by Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and Colletotrichum (the pathogen that leads to anthracnose stalk rot).

According to Channel, its new corn products are the result of a rigorous selection process using field-tested precision breeding based on extensive data and research.

Specific to Minnesota and the Dakotas, farmers may want to consider varieties 197-90 and 199-11 — 97-day and 99-day RM, respectively. Channel agronomist Derek Crompton of Hawley, Minn., said 199-11 is available with aboveground corn borer protection. New variety 197-90 is available with the corn borer and rootworm packages for above- and below-ground protection. It also is available with only corn borer protection, too.
