Growers have devised the following strategies to deal with a challenging wet spring and daunting market price forecast:

  • Become more profitable per acre instead of expanding number of acres

  • Monitor financial benchmarks closely

  • Build more resilient soil to cope with weather extremes

  • Devise a sidedress system to cover big acres in narrow windows

  • Invest in fertigation and variable-rate irrigation to offset dry spells

  • Broaden/diversify fertilizer sources and the number of crops grown

  • Reduce soil compaction
