Growers have devised the following strategies to deal with a challenging wet spring and daunting market price forecast:
Become more profitable per acre instead of expanding number of acres
Monitor financial benchmarks closely
Build more resilient soil to cope with weather extremes
Devise a sidedress system to cover big acres in narrow windows
Invest in fertigation and variable-rate irrigation to offset dry spells
Broaden/diversify fertilizer sources and the number of crops grown
Reduce soil compaction
