BENEFITS: Establishing pollinator habitat increases the biodiversity of nectar-producing plants that anchor soil and attract bees, butterflies and birds to pollinate crops and other plants. Farm Progress

The National Association of Conservation Districts recently released its new curriculum, “A Guide to Conducting a Pollinator Conservation Field Day.”

This guide provides learning experiences for students in kindergarten through eighth grade, engaging them in habitat-focused, pollinator-themed activities. Each activity is correlated to education standards and provides a pathway to valuable partnerships with local soil and water conservation districts.

Conservation districts involved

“By providing this field guide to both traditional and nontraditional educators, NACD is creating additional avenues for communities to interact and forge relationships with their local conservation districts,” says Tim Palmer, NACD president who farms in south-central Iowa. “The new curriculum guides teachers and educators through the resources and tools needed to conduct a successful pollinator field day, including planning and implementing guidelines, materials and evaluation strategies.”

“After years of population decline, pollinators need our help,” says Laurie Davies Adams, president of the Pollinator Partnership. “We are pleased to help support NACD’s work to create this field guide, facilitating better awareness and understanding of our hardworking pollinators."

National Pollinator Week

Each year, NACD celebrates National Pollinator Week in mid-June, facilitated by the Pollinator Partnership. National Pollinator Week was designated by the U.S. Senate in 2007, marking a necessary step toward addressing the decline of pollinator populations. Pollinator Week has grown into an international celebration, with schools, gardens, churches, stores and organizations hosting events celebrating and promoting pollinators.

America's conservation districts are at the forefront of pollinator education in their communities, assisting with workshops, outreach and awareness efforts like native plant sales and more, Palmer says. This year's Stewardship Week theme will focus on "Where Would We Bee Without Pollinators?" There will be free, downloadable education materials available, along with stewardship materials for all ages available on NACD’s Marketplace website
