OUTSTANDING SERVICE: Jon Roberts was recently named the 2017 Supervisor of the Year by the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

If you wanted to rewrite criteria for the IASWCD Supervisor of the Year, you could read through Jon Roberts’ nomination form and come up with a complete list of qualities that an outstanding supervisor for a soil and water conservation district should possess. Those who know Roberts praise him for his dedication, selflessness, honesty, insight and wisdom.

Roberts, Kosciusko County, was named the Supervisor of the Year at the recent annual conference of the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts. The award is presented each year to an outstanding supervisor nominated by peers and selected by IASWCD. The Supervisor of the Year award is sponsored by Indiana Prairie Farmer, and has been since the award was created nearly a decade ago.

This is the one award that IASWCD officers and staff keep secret until the announcement is made. “They did a good job of keeping it from me,” Roberts says. “I did get a little suspicious on the morning before the awards banquet when some of my family showed up to join me at the conference.”

Darci Zolman, manager of the Kosciusko County SWCD, says the district felt it was an honor to nominate Roberts for the award. Zolman and her husband, Don, received the Indiana Prairie Farmer Master Farmer award, co-sponsored by the Purdue University College of Agriculture, in 2016.

Just how dedicated is Roberts to causes he believes in? He is also a member of Kiwanis, and the group meets weekly. He has not missed a meeting in 46 years!

How is that possible? Roberts notes that Kiwanis has opportunities to make up meetings by attending other events, such as Key Club meetings for high school students. Occasionally, he has made up meetings. But by and large, he has been present every week when his local group meets for well over four decades. That’s dedication!
