The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Haskell Agricultural Laboratory will be holding a Climate and Crops Field Day on Aug. 14.
This event is free to the public. All ages are welcome, there will be a variety of activities and programs at this event. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the farm site, with booths and activities scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Lineup of climate-related topics
The morning will feature two sessions with concurrent tracks running each half of the morning. The first half (9:15 to 10:15 a.m.) will run concurrently and will feature the following two tracks:
• Climate & Livestock — fostering climate resilience in beef production, livestock mortality disposal options, heat stress in livestock
• Climate & Crops — climate change on insects in northeast Nebraska, the HAL long-term tillage experiment of over 30 years and new weeds in Nebraska
The second half of the morning (10:30 to 11:30 a.m.) will also feature two concurrent tracks:
• Climate & You — using Weather Data App, and localizing climate information: trends and projections for northeast Nebraska
• Ag Economics — farm bill, Nebraska farm real estate, and annual forage insurance to manage production risks with cover crops
Afternoon tours available
A free steak sandwich lunch will be served sponsored by the Nebraska Soybean Board. Lunchtime speakers will be Al Dutcher, UNL climatologist, and Michael Boehm, vice chancellor of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at UNL. Research tours will be available in the afternoon at 1:15 and 2:15 p.m.
In addition, Backyard Farmer will hold a live question and answer panel at 1:30 p.m. Walking tours of the Northeast Arboretum will also be available in the morning and afternoon.
Activities and booths available all day include the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Mobile Beef Lab, Science Literacy Trailer, Shooting Sports Trailer, Water Lab, Green Screen Technology, Maker Space Trailer, Robotics, Animals Inside and Out, a drilling rig, Ag Innovators project, various learning child activities, instant pot demonstrations, pressure canner testing and others. Northeast Power will be doing safety demonstrations, and vendors will also be present.
