If you or someone you know is a landowner dedicated to the principles of conservation-minded resource management, apply for the 2018 Leopold Conservation Award by March 1. Find the application at sandcountyfoundation.org.
In Nebraska, the award is presented by the Wisconsin-based Sand County Foundation, in partnership with Nebraska Cattlemen and the Nebraska Environmental Trust. The award is named after Aldo Leopold, whose 1949 book, “A Sand County Almanac,” was an early call to action on the land conservation front.
The Leopold Conservation Award is presented annually to a private landowner or company that demonstrates extraordinary achievement in voluntary conservation, inspires other landowners through their example, and helps the general public understand the vital role private landowners can play in conservation success. The 2017 award in Nebraska went to Kurt and Wayne Kaup of Stuart, owners and operators of K&W Farms, a pig farming operation.
The 2018 Leopold Conservation Award will be presented in November at the annual meeting of the Alliance for the Future of Agriculture in Nebraska in Lincoln.
