BALES GALORE: This lineup of big bales, stacked deep in a long line, caused Bruce Foster of Laketon, Ind., to pull over and snap this picture. Bruce Foster

How is winter prediction by wooly worm color working out for you this year? Someone asked me, keeping a straight face, if corn husks in fields I visited were tight or loose. They were convinced that was a sure sign as to what winter would be like.

This far into winter, the jury is still out. One thing is certain: The farmer who stacked up all the bales in the photo was hedging the bet. If winter drags on, they will just dig deeper into their stash of bales.

Thanks to Bruce Foster of Laketon, Ind., for spotting this unique winter forecasting tip! He will receive a $25 gift card. To earn your own card, send us a picture of a unique “Spotted …in Indiana” sighting. Maybe it’s a funny road sign, an unusual mailbox or, who knows, maybe a combine on top of a sign — they are all out there.

Or just identify the county or town where these bales were spotted. A winner will be drawn from all correct entries. Email your answer and mailing address to [email protected], or mail to 599N 100 West, Franklin, IN 46131.

The December issue featured two contests. Jim Wildermuth of Akron, Ind., an FFA advisor at North Miami High School, won the drawing for identifying “Where Tom was in Indiana.” Tom was on the banks of the Ohio River in Switzerland County. Congratulations, Jim!

The antique tool pictured touched quite the nerve! An upcoming story will share reader responses. Based on reader comments and evidence, the road grader pictured was likely produced by the Adams Co. in Indianapolis.

Congratulations to Larry Rosentrader of Churubusco, Ind., winner of the drawing and gift card. Larry claims to have the “doppelganger” of the road grader pictured behind his barn! OK, he taught me a new word, even if he is stretching it a bit. A “doppelganger” is believed to be a double of a living person, or maybe a spirit — its evil twin! Wonder which road grader is “evil.”
