SMILE TWICE: Steve Downey chuckled the first time he saw these old gateposts, decorated with a modern twist. He decided to share them with everyone. Steve Downey

The Spotted…in Indiana column is all about finding unusual sights along Indiana’s highways and rural roads, chuckling about them, and then sharing them with everyone else. There are plenty of unusual sights all over the state. That’s because Hoosiers are creative and like to have a good time.

Steve Downey spotted this pair of gateposts on a road in rural White County. They’re all painted up today, complete with not just smiley faces, but smiley people. That’s if you count stick figures as people.

There was a day when concrete gateposts served a purpose. Many farms were 80 or 160 acres, and most of them had livestock. Especially if the farm had cattle, strong fences were used to keep the herd in. And strong fences need sturdy corner posts.

Today, most of those fences have been removed. Sometimes the people who took out the fences left the corner posts, especially if they were concrete and still in good shape. These sturdy icons are a sign of days gone by. However, not everyone has gone to the trouble to spruce them up with a coat of paint, let alone smiley-face stick figures, just to make the neighbors smile when they pass by.

What have you spotted lately? Take a picture of it and send it our way. Be sure to take a horizontal image and send it in the largest size possible. Late-model cellphone cameras produce usable images in most cases.

Send your best image and a short description to [email protected]. If we use it in print, we will send you a gift card. Happy spotting!
