FAMILIAR FIELD: Chad Greenway grew up in central South Dakota, working the land and raising hogs and cattle. After a successful professional football career, Greenway has teamed up with Minnesota Pork to promote the meat that is “more than just food — it’s fuel.” Minnesota Pork

Chad Greenway’s story is one of hard work, perseverance and community — a narrative that stretches from the farmlands of South Dakota to National Football League stadiums, and now back to his agricultural roots.

Minnesota Pork has partnered with Greenway, where he draws from his farm upbringing and athletic career to advocate for the benefits of pork, particularly as a lean protein source.

The partnership aligns with the Minnesota Pork Board’s mission to promote and educate consumers to build trust in the benefits of pork and Minnesota’s pig farmers.

From farm boy to NFL star

Born in Mount Vernon, S.D., Greenway grew up working on his family’s farrow-to finish pig farm and cattle operation. Life on the farm was about responsibility and teamwork, values that would later shape his approach to football and leadership.

After excelling in multiple sports in high school, football became Greenway’s passion, earning him a spot at the University of Iowa. There he became a star linebacker, receiving first-team All-Big Ten honors and cementing himself as one of the top defensive prospects in the nation.

In 2006, Greenway was selected 17th overall by the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL draft. He became a cornerstone of the Vikings’ defense, recording more than 1,200 tackles and earning two Pro Bowl selections. Known for his intelligence, toughness and leadership, Greenway helped guide the team to multiple playoff appearances, becoming a fan favorite in Minnesota along the way.

Commitment to ag and community

Despite his success on the football field, Greenway never lost touch with his rural upbringing. After retiring from the NFL in 2016, he reconnected with agriculture and embraced advocacy work. Greenway’s family farm is still operational, and his uncle Brad Greenway has been recognized nationally as a finalist for America’s Pig Farmer of the Year.

Given his background, it was a natural fit for Chad Greenway to partner with Minnesota Pork to promote the benefits of pork as a sustainable, healthy protein choice, and he has become a spokesperson for the vital role farmers play in the food supply chain. His connection with pork isn’t just philosophical — it’s personal.

A perfect partnership

Greenway embodies the values that Minnesota Pork seeks to promote — hard work, resilience and community spirit. Through his advocacy, he helps raise awareness about the importance of pork as a healthy, sustainable protein option. His involvement not only highlights his personal connection to farming but also underscores the role pork plays in supporting active, healthy lifestyles.

As Greenway puts it, “Pork is more than just food — it’s fuel.” His story serves as a reminder of the power of hard work, the importance of sustainable farming and the role that nutritious food can play in supporting active, healthy lives.
