SPRING WONDERLAND? It was supposed to be spring when this photo was snapped on April 21, 2021. If you look closely, there are tops of 5-gallon buckets covering flowers in the lower right corner. Tom J. Bechman

If you’re driving along an Indiana road in mid-April, you expect to see tractors, and maybe even corn or soybeans peeking out of the ground. You don’t expect to see tree branches loaded with snow.

Yet that’s the scene that greeted Hoosier motorists on April 21, 2021. Mother Nature got in one final punch, with a couple of inches of wet snow falling in places. If you look closely at the picture taken along a rural road in Johnson County, you can see the colorful tops of 5-gallon buckets, turned upside down over peony plants, trying to protect them from the overnight reversal of seasons.

Based on another trip by the same location in late May, the buckets didn’t help. The plants were green, but only a couple bloomed.

Different scene

Indiana parks are a great source of beautiful scenery once spring and summer arrive. Todd Schmicker, Pulaski County, spotted the port-a-potty at a park in Winamac. The logo and company slogan caused him to do a double take. In case you can’t read it, it says: “Your #2 is our #1.” The play on words caused Todd to look twice.
