what is this forgotten tool?
WHAT AM I? The farmer who owns this tested me to see if I knew what this tool was used for. I figured it out — eventually. Now it’s your turn! Rex Brock

Rex Brock, Bourbon, Ind., wants to see just how well you know your history of old farm tools. He has one he is waiting to see if anyone can identify.

Correctly identify the tool pictured here and your name will be placed in a drawing for a gift card. Brock has the certificate to prove the identity of the item. It was manufactured by the Dennison Corp.

Email your guess to [email protected], or write to Indiana Prairie Farmer, 599 N., 100 W., Franklin, IN 46131. Please include your mailing address.

Brock will receive a gift card for supplying the mystery tool for this month. If you have a mystery tool, send a photo to [email protected]. If it’s used here, you will receive a gift card.

Washing machines

Several correctly identified the Maytag wringer-washer featured in the previous column and in the July Issue of Indiana Prairie Farmer. It was powered by an electric motor, and was just a step behind introduction of the automatic washer without wringers, which followed in the 1960s.

Congratulations to Margaret Horn, Crawfordsville, Ind., winner of the drawing.

Thanks to Adam Salsbery, Kokomo, Ind., for sending the picture below of the ABC wringer-washer, which appeared in farm homes about the same time as the Maytag wringer-washer. Salsbery says his mom’s grandpa manufactured ABC washing machines. His mom still has one in her basement.
