The clinics feature hands-on learning experience with a calving simulator.

The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association is bringing back the Cattlemen’s Academy Calving Clinics to three new locations across Ohio during January.

The Calving Clinics offer members a unique, hands-on learning experience with a calving simulator, and they will feature discussions on bull selection and prenatal cow and calf health from industry experts. 

All clinics will begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner being served first. Ohio Corn & Wheat is sponsoring these educational programs, as well as dinner at each location. The dates, locations and special guests for each clinic are as follows:

Jan. 11. The event will be held at Northwestern High School — Clark County, 5780 Troy Road Springfield, Ohio. The calving simulator will be run by Alvaro Garcia-Guerra, assistant professor, Ohio State Department of Animal Sciences. John Huston will discuss pre- and post-calving cow care. Veterinarian Frank “Bimbo” Welker will discuss calf health care. Register at ohioca.memberclicks.net.

Jan. 24. The event will be at Wyandot County Fairgrounds, 10171 Ohio Route 53, Upper Sandusky, Ohio. The calving simulator will be run by Justin Kieffer, professional practice associate professor, Ohio State Department of Animal Sciences. Aaron Arnett, director of beef genetics, ST Genetics, will discuss bull selection. There also will be discussion about prenatal cow and calf health. Register at ohioca.memberclicks.net.

Jan. 30. The event will be at Harrison County Fairgrounds, Grant St., Cadiz, Ohio. The calving simulator will be run by Shawn Wellert, senior lecturer, Ohio State Department of Animal Sciences. Bruce Smith, district sales manager beef specialist, Coba/Select Sires, will discuss bull selection. Garth Ruff, beef field specialist, Ohio State Extension, will discuss prenatal cow and calf health. Register at ohioca.memberclicks.net.

Cattlemen’s Academy events are free for Ohio Cattlemen’s Association members. Nonmembers may attend for $75 per family upon registration. This cost includes clinic attendance and an OCA membership. Registration is encouraged as there will be limited space at each clinic.
