BASF’s Clearfield canola production system in Canada and the U.S. has been acquired by Corteva Agriscience, Agriculture Division of DowDuPont and its Trunemco nematode seed treatment has been acquired by Nufarm.

About Clearfield

Clearfield canola is a globally-recognized non-genetically modified herbicide tolerance system, consisting of an herbicide tolerance trait and Imidazolinone herbicides sold in Canada primarily under the brand, Ares.

“This bolt-on acquisition strengthens Corteva Agriscience’s already established position in Clearfield canola seeds and traits and positions us well to deliver a holistic trait and herbicide solution to growers – a strong proof point of our ongoing commitment to expanding grower choice and delivering a complete solution for farmers,” said Rajan Gajaria, Executive Vice President Business Platforms for Corteva Agriscience. “This transaction supports Corteva Agriscience in supplying genetics for one of the most consumed vegetable oils globally, together with the heart-healthy Omega-9 oil segment, which reflects our continued focus on addressing consumer and farmer needs through differentiated offerings.”

The acquisition enables Corteva Agriscience, which previously licensed the Clearfield canola trait in both the Pioneer and Brevant seeds (previously Nexera) brands, to expand its position to include out-licensing of the Clearfield canola trait to other seed companies in Canada and the United States. In addition, acquiring the imazamox/imazapyr herbicides under the brand name Ares and the imazamox herbicides under the Tensile brand in Canada, provides Corteva Agriscience with the full canola system to offer to its customers and potential licensee partners in these important markets.

The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

About Trunemco

Trunemco is a global nematode management seed treatment solution with a first-of-its-kind patented combination of a microorganism and biochemical to defend against a broad spectrum of nematode species. Trunemco is pending EPA registration, but it is expected to be launched this year in the U.S.

“The acquisition of Trunemco is an excellent reflection of our commitment to help Nufarm partners and growers attain leading-edge solutions to combat the increasing challenges they face,” said Brendan Deck, General Manager, North America.

Trunemco is a seed-applied treatment that contains a biochemical which primes soybean, corn and cotton plant physiology, activating the natural defense systems that provide broad-spectrum protection against nematodes. It also contains a microbial which boosts root health and seedling vigor. Field trials of this natural biochemical and microbial solution result in higher yields and less nematode damage.

“Trunemco provides soybean producers with the opportunity to move beyond traditional chemistry-based products to address the threat of nematodes by managing the plant’s natural defenses. An additional related benefit is its low toxicity profile which significantly improves handling ease for growers/applicators, allowing them to improve their bottom line,” said Tom Kroll, Nufarm Seed Treatment Product and Technical Services Manager.
