Japan Sets Tolerance For Unapproved GM Crops

Japan’s agriculture ministry recently announced plans to allow sales of livestock feed containing up to 1% of unapproved genetically modified crops, according to a Japanese newspaper.

The ministry is expected to enforce the regulation early next year, the report said. This will be the first time the Japanese government has set a tolerance level for unapproved products in feed or food products.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, which supervises the presence of GM material in human food, is said to be in no hurry to set similar limits.
