Farmers Raise Money For Food Banks

Farmers Raise Money For Food Banks
Several groups of Dakota farmers and agribusinesses donate more than $51,000 to feed the hungry.

It is pretty cool that farmers in the Dakotas have raised a lot of money recently for food banks.

The South Dakota Corn Growers Association raised $25,000 for Feeding South Dakota, an organization that supplies food banks in South Dakota

North Dakota and South Dakota Farmers Union members raised more than $26,600 for food banks as part of a national challenge.

At the SDCGA’s recent annual meeting, Mark Gross, SDCGA president, challenged each member to give $100. Each $100 would allow Feeding South Dakota to purchase 400 meals, he said.

By the end of the evening, members and several agribusinesses had donated $25,000.

“Despite last summer’s drought, farmers have been very blessed these last few years. The right thing to do is help those who are less fortunate,” Gross said in a statement released by SDCGA. “People don’t go to the food bank because they want to; they go because they have nowhere else to turn.”

Agribusinesses that donated during the challenge included Cargill, Dupont Pioneer, First Bank & Trust, Monsanto, Premier Bank Card, Syngenta and WNAX Radio.

Farmers Union

North Dakota and South Dakota Farmers Unions led the nation in a drive to raise money among Farmers Union members to feed the hungry. NDFU raised $17,000 and SDFU members raised $9,600 as part of national campaign that raised $58,000.

No other state came close to raising as much and North Dakota and South Dakota Farmers Unions.

The National Farmers Union issued a challenge to members throughout the country to meet a $50,000 matching pledge made by the Howard G. Buffet Foundation. Members’ donations will go to food banks that serve hungry people in their communities.
