Engineering Awards Highlight New Tech

Ag engineers show that equipment makers continue to push the envelope in design and innovation.

Awards can be a good thing. They can show you the good and shine a light on the unknown that deserves more attention. That's true for the AE50 Awards announced earlier this month by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers.

This annual listing of the top 50 innovations in ag technology shows that you, dear reader, have a lot to choose from when looking for ways to innovate on your farm. Each year, this program highlights engineering innovations. And this year's list is pretty impressive. I've got the complete list at the end, but wanted to point to a few highlights.

Take the Kubota RTV1140CPX. It's a side-by-side utility vehicle. We featured it earlier in 2009 when it was introduced. This little truck goes from a two-passenger utility vehicle with a longer bed, to a four-place machine in three easy steps. Having the larger bed with this diesel-powered machine is handy, but when you want to haul more than two people somewhere remote, you can do that too.

Claas keeps innovating chopper heads with the new Orbis 900, which cuts a 30-foot swath - or 12 rows - through corn, milo or forage sorghum in a single pass and it's better matched to those giant Claas harvesters with their 800-plus horsepower capacity.

One of the more interesting awards is for the Agcommand system from Agco. It's an on-farm telemetry system that offers you an easy way to record and manage data. The system is stalled on each of your machines and using cellular technology, you can monitor equipment around your farm. This is an area we'll be hearing more about in 2010 as farmers look for better ways to manage data across a larger farming operation.

Or take the Wandering Shepherd Livestock Ear Tag, which uses satellite technology to track cattle. It's an interesting concept, which the company says exceeds USDA's current 48-hour traceability objective.

The awards judges like innovations across a design theme too. Take the Boomer 8N from New Holland. This 'retro-look' tractor with its modern continuously variable transmission earned AE50 honors. Innovation comes in many forms.

Below is a complete list of winners, you can check out a few yourself. And if you've already purchased one of these products consider yourself an innovative buyer as well.
