A warm winter and spring have led to early planting and much optimism for the 2012 cropping season.

Was it only a year ago when abundant rains caused a chain-reaction of misery in the Mid-South? Back then, a sense of disbelief set in as waterways swelled past their banks, flooding farmland and threatening towns.

To alleviate the rushing Mississippi River, the Army Corps of Engineers blew a levee at Bird’s Point in the Missouri Bootheel, allowing spillway farms and homes to be inundated. The Morganza spillway in Louisiana was later opened.
