BRING ON THE CATTLE: The Hoosier Beef Congress is reset for Feb. 19- 21. Tom J. Bechman

You read a blog in early November praising the Indiana Beef Cattle Association for moving forward with plans for the Hoosier Beef Congress, originally scheduled for the first weekend in December. Then COVID-19 spiked in Marion County, Ind., and the group was asked by health officials not to hold the event.

However, the show wasn’t canceled, and it wasn’t shifted to a virtual event. You likely already know my thoughts on virtual livestock shows. So that was a good call. Besides, we’re talking about the largest youth beef show held in Indiana — anywhere, anytime.

“We rescheduled the Hoosier Beef Congress for Feb. 19 through Feb. 21 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, and we’re confident it will happen,” says Joe Moore, executive director of the IBCA. “We will put together a health safety plan to address any possible concerns, and we’re moving forward.”

If you’re wondering if the IBCA leadership considered moving the event to a venue other than the Indiana State Fairgrounds — in Marion County, a COVID-19 hot spot — so did we. Moore notes that there simply isn’t another facility in the state large enough to hold an indoor event of this size in winter.

At this point, all the youth shows, youth activities, sales and trade show that normally occur with HBC are planned. Look for updates on the Hoosier Beef Congress at indianabeef.org or hoosierbeefcongress.com. For more details or to ask to be placed on the IBCA newsletter list for updates, call 317-293-2333.

Winter educational meetings

Normally, IBCA and Purdue University sponsor a series of district educational meetings around the state during the winter. Those meetings are going virtual, Moore says. In fact, instead of district meetings, there will be one combined online meeting, with everyone invited to watch live. The meeting is scheduled for Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. EST. For information about how to watch the program, check the IBCA website.

Purdue University Extension beef specialists will present a yet-to-be-determined educational topic related to beef production. In addition, there will be updates from the Indiana State Board of Animal Health and IBCA.

If you can’t join the program live, the recorded version will be posted at the IBCA website so you can watch it at your convenience. Watch the website for more details.

IBCA annual conference

Mark Jan. 23 on your calendar. Reserve this Saturday for the IBCA annual conference and annual meeting. It’s slated to be held at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds near Danville, Ind.

“We’re planning on a live event, with meals and good fellowship,” Moore says. Typically, the day involves educational meetings, a trade show, a banquet and award presentations to outstanding cattle producers across the state.

The annual meeting will also feature elections. Stay in touch on this event via the IBCA website. More information on details you need to know about the annual IBCA conference will be posted there.
