The Indiana Beef Cattle Association recognized a number of outstanding cattle producers and industry supporters at its recent annual convention. Joe Moore, executive vice president of IBCA, says the organization also elected officers and organized for 2019.

IBCA’s Young Cattleman of the Year award went to Paul Hodgen, Roachdale. Originally a researcher with Monsanto, Hodgen moved his family home to manage the cow herd and carry on the family grain operation.

Phillip and Patty Dow, Paragon, were recognized as Outstanding Cattlemen of the Year. They operate a diversified livestock and grain farm at Hoosier Homestead Farms, which has been part of their family since 1870. They’re also active in their local community.

The Friend of the Industry award went to Randy Haymaker of Hoosier Energy. A longtime representative of that group, Haymaker has helped make it possible for Hoosier Energy to support IBCA area beef meetings held each winter for the past several years.

There were two recipients of the Robert C. Peterson Lifetime Achievement Award. Barry Jordan, Rennselaer, was Young Cattleman of the Year in 1983, co-chair of the first IBCA Hoosier Beef Congress in 1987 and Cattleman of the Year in 2000. He was IBCA president in 2005.

The second recipient was a posthumous award presented to the family of the late Alan Armstrong, Springville. He was an educator for 43 years and helped grow his family farm at the same time. He was strongly committed to land stewardship and served as IBCA Area 2 director.

IBCA also elected officers during the annual convention. Officers include Bruce Lamb, Milford, president; Neal Smith, Pendleton, president-elect; Chad Lanum, Flora, vice president; and Andrew Stewart, Greensburg, treasurer. Also serving on the executive committee are Jennie Hodgen, Promotions Committee chair; Tim Schwab, Membership Committee chair; and Joe Horstman, immediate past president.
