Ballinger hosts Agri-Plex Ag Day March 15

BALLINGER - The 2006 Agri-Plex Ag Day is set for March 15 at Ballinger High School.

The biennial event, now in its 17th year, is coordinated by Texas Cooperative Extension, with the support of local and area agribusiness and trade show exhibitors. Program highlights will include discussions on agricultural and consumer issues facing rural Texans.

Activities will include about 30 commercial exhibits at the trade show, which opens concurrent with registration at 9 a.m.

The Southern Rolling Plains Cotton Growers Association's annual meeting will start at 10 a.m., and a health fair will be presented from 9 a.m.-noon in the junior high gymnasium. The health fair will feature diabetes and cholesterol screening, blood pressure checks and various health-information booths.

Participants may choose between two educational sessions. The Women's Forum begins at 11 a.m. After lunch the Women's Forum and the agricultural programs will run concurrently beginning at 1:30 p.m. The agricultural program will be in the school's auditorium and the Women's Forum will be in the home economics department.

The agriculture program will focus on precision farming, cotton root rot management, genetic engineering, forage diversity and alternative energy sources (wind energy).

The Women's Forum will feature an 11 a.m. prescription drug plan counseling session. After lunch, the program will resume with discussion on mental health, healthful living, quilting and butterfly gardening.

A complimentary meal and awards program will begin at noon, courtesy of the Southern Rolling Plains Cotton Growers Association, Ag Day sponsors and on-site exhibitors.

The Farm Family of the Year, the Agribusiness of the Year and the Pat

Lee Memorial Scholarship recipients will all be named during a 1 p.m. awards program.

Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be available for participants.
