Agribusiness: Resource registered for cotton defoliation

EPA has issued a Section 3 registration for the application of flumiclorac pentyl ester or Resource as a defoliant in cotton. Valent USA Corporation’s first product for the cotton defoliant market, Resource is designed to deliver consistent defoliation even in the most unpredictable weather conditions, the company says.

“Consistent performance from a defoliant is critical during uncertain weather conditions,” said Cam Smith, Resource brand manager for Valent. “Last season, Resource proved its consistency again, even under the adverse conditions of two hurricanes.”

Smith says Resource’s clean and efficient defoliation offers added economic benefits for cotton farmers. “With Resource, there is little incidence of re-growth so farmers save on fuel costs by limiting their trips in the field,” he notes. “A thorough defoliation from Resource also means less leaf trash at the gin and a higher grade of cotton for the farmer.”

Resource may be applied through ground spray in conjunction with a boll opener. Resource should be applied when bolls are 40 percent to 60 percent open and a minimum of seven days prior to harvest. Use rates are 6 ounces to 8 ounces per acre.

In a survey conducted last fall, Smith said, 60 dealers and consultants said their customers need a consistent product their farmers can depend on, regardless of weather conditions. “We feel Resource will fulfill that need in the defoliant market and be a valuable product for cotton farmers looking for a strong finish to the growing season.”

Other study findings:

• Ninety-six percent of the dealers agree that limiting sticking leaves is essential for quality cotton

• Key features that dealers claim drive purchasing decisions for cotton defoliants include effectiveness, efficacy, weather-independence and control of re-growth.

Smith says Resource not only demonstrated a strong performance in Valent trials, but also has exhibited quick and consistent defoliation in third party research trials and was voted the No. 1 defoliant at the Beltwide Defoliation Trials two years in a row.
