Workshops Target Timber And Wildlife
New York Farm Show forestry workshops aim to help farmers and woodlot owners make timber ground more productive.

The New York Forest Owners Association, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry will present a series of free forestry programs each day of New York Farm Show – Feb. 23-25, at the state fairgrounds in Syracuse. The half-hour sessions target landowners who want to enhance woodlot values for timber, wildlife, and recreation.
The seminars are free, and will be presented in the Arts and Home Center' Somerset Room on the lower level. Here's the schedule of topics and expert presenters:
Thursday, Feb. 23

HE'S BACK AGAIN! Andy Metz, certified consulting forester, Cortland Forestry, will brush the limbs and leaves away from his crystal ball to peer into what the future holds for timber prices at New York Farm Show on Saturday morning. 1 p.m. Silvopasture benefits to land, livestock and farmers: Brett Chedzoy, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schuyler County
2 p.m. Need-to-know's about Emerald Ash Borer: Rebecca Hargrave, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chenango County.
Friday, Feb. 24
10 a.m. Hunting leases for landowners: Tom Dziekan, consultant for Hunting Lease Network, Phelps, N.Y.
11 a.m. Best practices for improving timber values: Peter Smallidge, Cornell Cooperative Extension forester
1 p.m. Sugarbush thinning to improve trees and sap quality: Peter Smallidge
2 p.m. Woodland and wildlife info sources for landowners: Rich Taber, NYFOA's state wildlife grant coordinator
Saturday, Feb. 25
10 a.m. Timber market values, present and future: Andy Metz, certified consulting forester, Cortland Forestry
11 a.m. To be arranged
Be sure to visit the forest information booth (I-55) in the International Building. It's jointly hosted by Forest Owners Association volunteers, DEC Service Foresters, CCE Extension Foresters and with Master Forest Owner volunteers. Free information (brochures, publications, people, organizations, and resources) will be available at the booth. A number of timber-related New York Farm Show exhibits are also located in the International Building.
