Karlen Ranch, Reliance, N.D., recently reported that 820 acres of dryland winter wheat averaged 108 bushels per acre. Reliance is located west of Chamberlain, S.D.

Three fields were planted to NuDakota, a 2006 white wheat release from AgriPro. Yields ranged from 100 to 118 bushels per acre.

The crop hadn't lodged, Brad Karlen says. He and his brother, brother, Warren, grew the crop and credit good environment conditions, fertile soils and a high-yield no-till management strategy for the 100+ bushel per acre average.

Rollie Sears, AgriPro wheat breeder, says that NuDakota has very high yield potential.

In the Pacific Northwest, the variety has yielded 150 bushels per acre.

"We just don't normally get conditions like that in the Plains States," he says.

"NuDakota is unique," Sears adds, "in that it has topped yield trials when yields are extremely high and also when drought causes yields to be low.

Karlen Ranch is an AgriPro seed dealer.
