Editors take their job seriously at Husker Harvest Days. Five Farm Progress editors scoured the show site to find their favorites from food vendors.

Grand Island Central Catholic

It was a rib-eye sandwich with cheese that grabbed editors’ attention at Grand Island Central Catholic schools’ two locations at Third Street and Central Avenue. They offer steak sandwiches, hamburgers, brats, ice cream and homemade pies.

Students, parents, teachers, Knights of Columbus members and Central Catholic alumni work the stand every year. Funds raised go to projects and organizations in the school system, such as the fine arts department, school foundation and student council.

The group takes vendor orders and makes deliveries all day. They also have a breakfast menu for those out at the show early, including sausage, egg and cheese muffins.

Eagle’s Nest

You can’t go wrong with a bacon cheeseburger from the Eagle’s Nest, operated by Wood River Rural Schools. Homemade breakfast sandwiches from the Eagle’s Nest are also popular, along with cinnamon rolls, and cherry and apple turnovers.

About 30 students from Wood River Rural Schools, along with adult volunteers, including alumni, parents and teachers, work to raise funds for extracurricular activities — from sports to band to leadership.

The Hula Hut

It’s the beef, baby — brisket, that is. The Hula Hut, operated by the Grand Island Senior High School Islander Athletic Booster Club continues the tradition of its famous beef brisket sandwich. But the club has branched out to offer a “Pig on a Stick,” which is a bacon-wrapped pork chop.

A crew of 60 student and parent volunteers work to raise funds for school supplies and equipment for athletic activities. For each shift they volunteer for, student-athletes are entered for scholarships to be given in their senior year.

Pork Place

If you need a hefty dose of protein, try The Pork Place’s “Husker Burger,” which combines the sliced smoked pork loin sandwich and bacon burger into one.

Volunteers from Sutton Christian School work at The Pork Place. Funds raised go toward paying teachers’ salaries and the school’s general fund. In addition to their regular menu items, exhibitors can preorder and have food catered to their location.

Grand Island Northwest Viking Shipyard

Grand Island Northwest High School Athletic Boosters serve up a mean Philly steak sandwich. For breakfast, you won’t want to miss their cinnamon rolls and breakfast sandwiches, and they will be taking preorders.

Proceeds from sales support the athletic booster club for the high school, providing support for student athletes and the teams; annual scholarships; and assistance in purchasing uniforms, mats, equipment and other needs of the athletic programs.
