Normally Farm Progress staff and editors are out in fields capturing images of planting, harvest and everything in between. This weekend, many of the editors, along with family and friends, turned their attention to the sky to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. Lucky for them, rural areas have the best viewing with lack of polluting light sources.

Staff as far south as Arkansas and Mississippi were able to see the light show in the sky, and boy, was it spectacular.

For many, seeing the Northern Lights on May 10 or 11 was a first-time experience. According to the National Weather Service, extreme geomagnetic (G5) levels seen over the weekend hadn’t been observed in the U.S. since October 2003.
