More Than 90,000 Cattle, Calves Lost in ND

Hardest hit counties include Morton and McHenry.

The North Dakota Farm Service Agency estimates that 90,000 cattle and calves have been lost due to the tough winter conditions and spring flooding. Each year approximately 1 million calves are born in North Dakota.

So far, FSA reports the following livestock losses:

  • 19,107 adult cattle.

  • 71,823 calves.

  • 180 horses.

  • 2,948 other animals, mostly sheep and poultry, have died across the state this year.

Hardest hit counties are including Morton (6,800 animals lost), McHenry, 6,500; and Dunn, 5,700. Six more counties each reported losses of more than 4,000 animals.
